As with the history of many families of Jumilla, in the lasts centuries our family was already transforming the grapes from its vineyards into those wines of which were characteristic of this land, Full-bodied, intense in colour and with a high degree of alcohol content. Almost three generations later, we returned to our origins and we are once again doing the same; now with other means and technology. We are once again people of the countryside, taking care of our vineyards and our territory. Bodegas Carchelo, S. L., founded in 1990, is in Jumilla (Murcia), at the foot of the Sierra del Carche, Protected Regional Park in which the highest peak “Madama” is 1,372 m high. The Mediterranean, together with our inland location on a plateau provides us with a unique climate. An average annual relative humidity of 60%, 3.000 hours of sunshine per year, with an average altitude of 600 meters over the sea level and very low rainfall which, not exceding 20 days of rain per year. It offers dry and mountainous land, of steppes and pilgrims, where the vineyard historically found a unique habitat for producing grapes of exceptional quality. Our vineyards are located in plots spread over different areas of the substantial municipal area, obteining a good variety in the type of soils, ,altitude and orientation on hillsides or valleys. The different locations lead to different absorption of solar radiation, temperature and exposure to the wind. This gives to us different stages of ripeness, developing grapes with many different subtleties. The harvest is carried out in a staggered way at the optimum time and manually, thus respecting the vineyard and its treasure in the form of perfect bunches of grapes. Our facilities boast all the necessary means and technology for wineking, nurturing, bottling and preserving our wines in the best conditions possible of hygiene and food safety. We ferment in stainless steel automated tanks, with automated control and regulation of temperature and capacity from 5.000 to 25.000 liters, depending on the sizes of the plots harvested. Our barrel room where the wines are aged has a capacity of 700 top quality French oak barrels with different degrees of toasting, renewing part of them every year. The room is conditioned to maintain a constant temperature and level of humidity throughout the whole year.
