PHILONIANUM SUSUMANIELLO SALENTO IGT
Description
Tenute Lu Spada is located on the ancient Appian way, an historical, pedestrian cycle path right at our winery doors.
Brindisi has a noteworthy winemaking past, ancient amphorae travelling across the Mediterranean were manufactured here on our coastline.
We were inspired by the story of an ancient wine produced in Brindisi and rediscovered through the fragments of amphorae dating from 19 B. C.
These fragments were found in Masada at the fortress of Herod the Great, the Jewish king who lived 2,000 years ago. As it seems, he preferred Roman wine over domestic vintage.
The name of the wine was “Philonianum”, and the amphorae displayed a Brindisi’s family seal, Laenius.
As we take inspiration from Brindisi historical winemaking tradition, we chose to name our Susumaniello after this wine, on the label is a stylized image of an amphorae.
Philonianum is ruby red, rich with total acidity, dry, elegant with austere taste. It is suitable for ageing and refining in the bottle.
